Fable is an AI roleplaying app centered on immersive stories rather than simple character-based chats you usually see in apps like this. I think apps like this can be kind of controversial, but it's been a very fun experiment in prompt & context engineering.
I like giving LLMs personality and... life that they don't have by default — getting them out of that assistant box. In this app, a large part of that is embodying fictional characters or even real people, but most importantly it's about making responses sound and feel human. That human feel will be necessary for any AI companion that's supposed to be a part of our daily lives.
That's only one half of it though, the other is managing a lot of context (both for immersion and costs lol) and keeping things consistent over long chats. Landing on the perfect summarization/compaction strategy is challenging, but I find the work fun and rewarding!
